Chocolate Sorbet

Evening everyone!

First of all - I made a couple of changes to my header.  I loved it before but it was a big too bold for what I wanted - so I added, cut, tweaked and voila!  I think I am finally satisfied. :)

Second of all - Check out Bruce's post on our snow shoeing adventure.  He went into way more detail than I did and added more photos.

Third of all - I still haven't gotten the house tour video to work.  Actually - that's kind of a lie.  I didn't even try today, I had too many other things to do.  But I promise - one of these days I will show you where I live!

And finally (and most importantly!) tonight I am going to share a step-by-step post about how to make (drum roll pleeeeeeease) Chocolate Sorbet!

My love for Chocolate Sorbet started in college when I came across Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Sorbet during a late-night trip to Wawa.  I was instantly in love because (1) it's chocolate and (2) it's a cold school-related-stress-reducing treat, but it's not ice cream (and I have to watch my dairy intake).

At one point during my senior year, I went looking for the sorbet and couldn't find it.  I found raspberry and mango, but no chocolate.  It was kind of a sad day, food-wise.

Then one day, years later in a random Kroger in Atlanta, I FOUND IT!  I was so excited there is very good chance I actually screamed in the ice cream aisle.

(I scream, you scream, we all scream for ... )

I was so concerned about the three-year-lack-of-chocolate-sorbet that I bought two.  Just to be on the safe side.

Because you never know.

And apparently that was smart.  Because from there on out it was hit or miss as to whether or not we'd find it.  One day Bruce actually asked a store manager and he found out that this is seasonal!  Who knew?!

Anyway - fast forward to Christmas.  Bruce surprised me with ...

The Ice Cream Maker Attachment for my KitchenAid!  He said he wasn't sure if he should get it for me, but when he read that you can make sorbet in it, he hit "buy now" faster than Lilly runs into the laundry room for breakfast in the morning.

The busyness of the holiday kept us distracted, but last week I googled recipes, tweaked the ones I liked and we finally fired up Big Red III to give this attachment her maiden spin.

This was fun, delicious and way easier than I would have thought.  If you have an ice cream maker, a KitchenAid attachment or just some creative how-to ... make this sorbet.

Chocolate Sorbet
adapted from this recipe

1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Cocoa Powder
1/4 tsp Vanilla
1/8 tsp Salt
2 cups Water

That's it!  Not many ingredients at all.

Start by adding your sugar into a skillet or saucepan ...

*Note - we used the "full" cup and it was VERY sweet.  I wouldn't reduce the sugar to 3/4 cup, but I would suggest not fill the measuring cup all the way full.

Then your cocoa powder ...

Then your vanilla ...

And your salt.

Easy enough, right?  So far we're just mixing ingredients together.  It's like baking a cake.

Then add your water.

Woooooosh!

(You know you love the added commentary!)

Then turn on the skillet to medium heat and stir constantly until dissolved.  Once the cocoa powder is dissolved, removed it from the heat, cover and refrigerate until chilled.

Once your mixture is chilled, take your ice cream bowl out of the freezer and carefully attach everything.

I saw "carefully" because it IS possible to burn yourself on these cold bowls.

Trust me.

Turn the mixer on low and add the chocolate mixture.

Read the directions on your mixer or ice cream maker to determine speed and time, but I'd say let 'er rip for about 20 minutes.

Or until it looks like you've made SORBET!  Then scoop everything out into a plastic container and put it in the freezer for at least an hour to let everything firm up.

And then the rest is history.

As long as there is cocoa powder, there is sorbet.

And that, my friends, is pretty sweet.

Enjoy!

(Ugh, sorry for the bad pun at the end.)
