I'm a Big Girl Now

I got some good news today, so my mom 'took' Bruce and me out to dinner to celebrate.

('Took' meaning she said, "Go out to eat and charge it on 'The Discover.'")

('The Discover' meaning the credit card that she gave me when I was in high school until I got my own.  It came in handy last year when we were planning the wedding and I needed to buy something.  She hasn't asked for it back yet (and I have offered, I swear!) and from time to time she will tell us to go out to eat 'on her'.)

As I was on my way to meet Bruce for dinner, I started to think about a conversation I was having with a friend and co-worker the other day about my cell phone voicemail.  Here's the thing - I got my first cell phone when I was 16 years old, set up the voicemail and it hasn't changed since.  The message said something to the effect of, "Hey, it's Sarah.  I'm not here right now, but leave me a message and I'll get back to you soon."  Very casual, nonchalant and I sounded like I was 16.

So here I am 9 years later; I have a master's degree and am getting ready to start looking for a 'big girl' job.  Bruce and I cancelled our land line because we weren't using it so our cell phones are our only phones.  Current supervisors and future employers may be (actually, have already been) calling me on my cell phone and I thought I needed a more professional-sounding voicemail.  This friend agreed.

I decided to change my voicemail in the car, while I was thinking about it.  It's short, simple and professional sounding.  "Hi, you've reached the voicemail for Sarah Weaver.  Please leave a message."

Fast forward two hours.  Bruce and I are finishing up our dinner and I'm signing the check, while simultaneously telling Bruce about changing my voicemail.  "I'm so grown up," I gloated as I signed my name to the restaurant's copy of the bill and put my credit card back in my wallet.

"Yeah, so grown up," Bruce laughed.  "As you use your mother's credit card to pay for dinner."

I guess we all have to start somewhere.

  1. hahaha! This made me laugh out loud! My voice mail message hasn't changed since college, but I'm a little attached it. Maybe one day...
