The One Where I Ran in 90 Degree Heat And Now My Legs Hate Me

Alternatively Titled: Ouch.

Okay, so after church I decided I was going to eat lunch, clip coupons (go ahead - mock me!) and go for a run.  I'm really trying not to run in the middle of the day when the heat is at its worst, but it seemed like the clouds were rolling in and the temperature was hovering below 90.  So I decided to go for it.

Bad idea.

Actually, that's not entirely true.  I started strong and I ended strong.  But in the middle my legs felt like I was dragging around 50 pounds weights and I felt like I had no coordination.  I walked a lot.  Here is the breakdown of my four miles:

Mile 1: 10:14
Mile 2: 9:00
Mile 3: 16:27 <-- Eh.
Mile 4: 8:58

Okay, so here's the funny thing about the last mile.  For some reason I got a second wind and decided to open my stride and fly.  8:58 is the fastest mile I've recorded so far on my sensor, so when I finished the workout, Lance Armstrong's voice came through my headphones, congratulating my on a personal best! It kind of makes me want to go run for speed so I can hear him again ...

It was SO hot out that I got home and collapsed on the floor to stretch.  I went to get up to get some water and couldn't move - I had a terrrrible cramp in my leg.  Note to self:  Pre-stretching is just as important as post-stretching.  When you are running in 90 degrees, multiply that rule by 12.

Lesson learned.  Ouch.

Anyway, my mom offered to "take" Bruce and me out for dinner tonight to celebrate the completion of my last on call and my last week of CPE!  She's awesome like that.

After a summer in business attire and heels, it felt great to throw on flip flops for a night out.

We decided to wander Target after dinner and came across a really inexpensive tripod.  I've been eyeing them for awhile, and Bruce told me it would be a worthwhile investment, especially now that I'm finishing up CPE and will have more time with my camera.  It was after 9 p.m. when I got home, so there wasn't much for me to shoot :) but I did sneak out on my porch and shot the building next to ours.  Because I was using the tripod and didn't have to worry about a steady hand I used a super slow shutter speed and was able to capture really sharp light rays coming off of the street lights.

I wouldn't call me Ansel Adams or anything, but it's kind of neat.

Okay, I'm off to rehydrate, stretch and fall into bed.  Goodnight!

  3. You are so brave for attempting to run in this heat, let alone 4 miles! Holy cow! I just walk to my car and feel like I'm going to pass out! And yay for this being your last week! I remember how nervous you were when it all started and now it's over :-)
